- modem is attached to.
-
- 3. From the Modem pop-up menu, identify the CCL script for your
- modem by selecting the type of modem you are using.
-
-  The CCL script for your modem should automatically appear as the
- default in the Modem field. All CCL scripts located in your
- Extensions folder are displayed in the pop-up menu.
-
- 4. From the After connect pop-up menu, select the action you want
- InterPPP to take after establishing a connection.
-
- • Click Start PPP to have InterPPP begin the PPP session after it
- connects. Proceed to Step 9.
-
- OR
-
- • Click Show terminal window to have InterPPP display a terminal
- window after it connects. When displayed, the terminal window
- prompts you for a user name and password. Proceed to Step 9.
-
- OR
-
- • Click Attempt UNIX login to have InterPPP display prompts for a
- user name and password for a UNIX‚Ñ¢ login after it connects. The
- Modem Configuration dialog changes to include a User name and
- Password field. These fields are automatically entered to log in after
- the connection is made. Proceed to Step 7.
-
- OR
-
- • Click Attempt Comm Server login to automate a connection to your
- terminal server. The Modem Configuration dialog changes to include
- User name, Password, Prompt, and Command fields. Proceed to Step 5.
-
- 5. In the Prompt field, enter the prompt that is to be delivered by your
- server once you are connected.
-
- 6. In the Command field, enter the command necessary to successfully
- log in.
-
-   Contact your System Administrator to find out what you need to
- enter in th Prompt and Command fields for your particular server.
-
-
- 7. In the User name field, enter your user name on the server you are
- connecting to.
-
- 8. In the Password field, enter your password on the server you are
- connecting to.
-
- 9. Check Modem Speaker if you want to turn on your modem’s speaker
- during a connection attempt.
-
- 10. Specify a connection type by selecting either Manual, Automatic,
- Constant, or Direct.
-
- • Click Manual if you plan to start and stop the remote network
- connection manually. The Modem Configuration dialog includes the
- Drop idle connection field. Proceed to Step 11.
-
- OR
-
- • Click Automatic to connect to the remote network automatically
- whenever there is information to be sent. The Modem
- Configuration dialog includes the Drop idle connection field.
- Proceed to Step 11.
-
-  Automatic connection is recommended for use with the Dial on
- Demand feature of InterPPP. See Section 4.1, Creating a New
- Connection Document , for information on the Dial on Demand
- feature.
-
- OR
-
- • Click Constant to maintain a constant connection to the remote
- network. The link immediately redials if a connection is dropped for
- any reason. The Drop idle connection field is hidden. Proceed to
- Step 12.
-
- OR
-
- • Click Direct if there is no modem involved and the two machines are
- directly connected via a serial line. The PPP driver restarts the PPP
- session immediately if it is ever terminated. The Drop idle connection
- field is hidden. Proceed to Step 12.
-
- 11. Specify the number of seconds InterPPP waits before dropping an
- idle connection in the Drop idle connection field.
-
- 12. Click the close box in the upper left hand corner of the dialog to close
- the Modem Configuration dialog.
-
- ‚àö The Connection Document window is displayed.
-
- 13. Select Save from the File menu to save the modem settings for this

-
- 5.2 PPP Configuration
-
- To configure the PPP settings for an open connection document:
-
-   The PPP Configuration dialog does not have a Cancel button to
- undo undesired changes. If you make changes to the settings in the
- PPP Configuration dialog that you want to undo, close the dialog

- the changes. When the connection document is reopened, the
- settings in this dialog are unchanged.
-
- 1. Select PPP… from the Configure menu while the desired Connection
- Document window is open.

- 2. Uncheck Protocol Compression if the server you are connecting to
- does not support compression of the PPP protocol.
-
- 3. Uncheck Address Compression if the server you are connecting to does
- not support compression of IP addresses.
-
-  The protocol and address compression options of InterPPP are
- governed by the standards set in RFC1331.
-
- 4. Select an authentication protocol by clicking either PAP Authentication
- or CHAP Authentication if they are enabled.
-
-  The authentication radio buttons are enabled when the
- Authenticated User option is selected in the Connection Document
- window. See Section 4.1, Creating a New Connection Document ,
- for information on the Authenticated User option.
-
- • Click PAP Authentication if the server you are connecting to supports
- this type of user authentication.
-
- OR
-
- • Click CHAP Authentication if the server you are connecting to
- supports this type of user authentication.
-
- 5. Use the keys in the Character Map to select which control characters
- the remote network needs to escape when it sends information back to
- your Macintosh. The default setting maps out ^Q and ^S.
-
-   Some modems do not transmit control characters (ASCII characters
- 0 through 31) through their serial links. The Character Map option
- allows you to substitute characters that you know cannot be
- transmitted through your modem with characters that the remote
- network recognizes and replaces with the correct characters once
- the information has passed over the link successfully.
-
-   The PPP protocol maps two characters for each control character,
- which can slow transmission. Contact your System Administrator
- or your modem manufacturer to find out if there are any characters
- you need to map out for your modem.
-
- 6. Enter the largest number of bytes to be transmitted by your modem in
- the Maximum Frame Size text field (1500 by default).
-
- 7. If you want to reset all parameters in this dialog to InterPPP’s default
- settings, click Default Settings (Figure 5.3).

-
- To configure the TCP/IP settings for an open connection document:
-
-   The TCP/IP Configuration dialog does not have a Cancel button to
- undo undesired changes. If you make changes to the settings in the
- TCP/IP Configuration dialog that you want to undo, close the dialog
- and then close the Connection Document window without saving
- the changes. When the connection document is reopened, the settings
- in this dialog are unchanged.

-
-   The Local IP Address and Remote IP Address fields may be left as
- 0.0.0.0 if the Server option of the Obtain Address box is selected in
- the MacTCP Administrator dialog. See Section 3.1,TCP/IP
- Connections , for more information on the Server option.
-
- 4. Uncheck TCP/IP Header Compression if the server you are connecting
- to does not support the compression of headers.
-
- 5. Check Use SLIP Protocol to disable PPP and enable the SLIP protocol
- to be used over the modem connection for TCP/IP connections only.
-
-   AppleTalk cannot be used over a SLIP connection.
